Garden: New Bed!

I’ve been spending some time in the garden lately.  Last Sunday I actually had an entire day to spend working in the yard.  It was fantastic!  There has been a log pile in front of a building in our yard for a few years now.  Last summer I looked at it and realized that it would make a great new garden.  I didn’t do anything with it last year.  But last Sunday I finally got around to getting started on it.  The space is pretty big so I decided to break it up into 2 or 3 smaller beds with a  bit of space between them.  I didn’t want to spend much money on it so I just used the existing rotten logs as a border and used some compost and topsoil that I bought at the garden store to plant in.  I made sure to leave as much of the rotten wood underneath the dirt as I could.  I even got some plants in it already.  Right now it has a 2 ground cherry plants, 2 bell peppers of different varieties, a couple transplanted black eyed susans, a fennel plant, a couple of seeds from a new variety of cucumbers that I want to try, and a dozen assorted strawberries.  I’m hoping over time to let the strawberries take over and fill in the bed.

I almost forgot to mention.  There is what looks like a rose bush or something growing out of a log on the edge of the bed.  I decided to leave it and see what it turns into.  I can always cut it down later.

In other news some of my other flowers are blooming.  It makes me happy to see the little spots of color here and there.  I may go crazy and put in a new garden with just flowers in it.  I don’t know if I am capable of not adding edibles to it though.  Maybe some thyme as ground cover 🙂
